A Black and White Collection of Images from the 2020 Foaling Season
It’s baby season here in Florida, and by “baby” I mean foals! New foals are hitting the ground all over NE Florida and I’ve had the pleasure to photograph several of them in their early days of life. The 2020 foaling season has left many expecting horse owners, with sleepless nights as they worry over the safe arrival of new colts and fillies to their stables.
Fast Horse Photography has had the honor of documenting the early days of several foals in the St. Augustine, Florida area and here are a collection of images presented in black and white. Black and white photography allows the viewer of the image to focus on the moment and connection between mare and foal and removes the distracting elements that are often found around stable yards. When you look at these images think about how they make you feel as the viewer. As a mother can you relate to the connection you see? As a horse owner do you see the personalities of the mare and foal coming through?
Black and white photography has an incredible way of showcasing texture and light. For example the bright sun rays coming through in the first image above highlight the foals environment of dust and bugs in the air and the soft brand new coat of the foal feels almost touchable. In the image below, the foals whiskers almost jump off screen with their sweet little twists and turns.
Often, while I’m in the field shooting an opportunity for an image comes along that I know before I even click the shutter that it will be perfect for black and white. These are often the images that I am most excited to develop at the end of an equine and equestrian photography session. I know the emotion will be there. I know the texture, composition, and light of the image will be exactly what I wanted to allow the subject to pull emotion from the viewer.
While most of us view the world in color, I like to believe that there are moments when we feel the world in black and white.
