See The Iconic Mustangs at Deerwood Ranch Wild Horse EcoSanctuary Through the Eyes of Fast Horse Photography
Wild mustangs are true symbols of the American West.
Free Spirited.
Trailblazers.
Legendary spirits of the grasslands.
They personify freedom. And the deep desire in our hearts to seek adventure.
America’s wild horses remind us of our nation’s history. How we got here. Where we’ve been. What’s next?
The awe-inspiring wild mustang has a spirit of independence and a strong will to survive.
They remind us of peaceful life on the plains. The simplicity of watching a brilliant sunset, or an alluring moon rise. Cookin’ a pot of coffee on an open flame and warming your toes as you wait. Readying your horse for a ride. Simply a ride. No agenda. No direction. You and your horse heading out to enjoy space. Vast space. Where your thoughts drift away and natural beauty fills your mind.
A life long forgotten for most city folk.
Gone are the days for plenty of us where we rise by the rooster’s crow and tend to the animals before checking Facebook. Am I right?
Life before electronics took over.
Do you ever take time to slow down? Unplug. Seek adventure? It’s not easy for most of us. With jobs, kids, homes, and four-leggeds to care for. But, it sure is a crucial part of survival.
Let me inspire you to have a wild mustang moment. Getting back to the roots of your pioneering spirit. Seeking the thrill of adventure and the ease of life.
Maybe that means heading to the beach and putting your toes in the sand. Or taking that balloon ride you’ve always dreamed of. Peering over the basket at the sites and scenes below. Going on a sunrise trail ride with some friends. With no plans except to be one with your horse. Keep your eyes off your watch and focus on joy.
You might have to remind yourself how to get back to that place of freedom and the ability to find adventure.
You can do it. I know you can.
I believe in you.
Be a trailblazer!
As a professional equine photographer, I am so thankful for the photoshoot endeavors that take me to places like Deerwood Ranch Wild Horse EcoSanctuary in Laramie, Wyoming. To get my fill of mustang moments - actual ones!
Let me tell you about this amazing place. Deerwood Ranch is a family-owned wild horse sanctuary that partners with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
On their website they share, We are the very first BLM Certified Wild Horse EcoSanctuary. What this means is that we are private landowners approved by the BLM to care for wild horses. Deerwood Ranch is a family-owned operation that has been used for cattle ranching for 30 years.
With the growing need to maintain the numbers of wild horses and with dwindling grazing available in the wild, the BLM (Bureau of Land Management, Department of the Interior) has turned to private landowners for help. There are 16 wild horse herd management areas in Wyoming alone, operated by the BLM on public properties.
Ours is the very first Wild Horse EcoSanctuary on private land in the entire United States. Here, these beautiful animals will be able to live out their lives and be cared for in a setting that is as close to possible like their natural environment... only better!
Deerwood Ranch is approximately 4,700 acres of Wyoming beauty. With the Middle Fork of the Little Laramie River running through the property, there is year-round access to live running water. Abundant trees and willows provide refuge and great protection from the realities of Wyoming Winter. Open fields invite long runs and lazy afternoon grazing. 350 wild Wyoming mustangs call Deerwood home, not to mention the native deer, elk, coyote, and all manner of wildlife.
What a fantastic opportunity to capture unique horse images at Deerwood Ranch. It blows me away every stinkin’ time I visit. The sites, the smells, the vast meadowlands whisper my name and draw me back.
A steamy cup of hot chocolate warming my hands as we await the arrival of the herd makes my heart skip a beat.
My eager anticipation can’t be missed.
The thundering of the horse's hooves as they approach - there is nothing else like it on the planet.
I focus and catch the subtle nuances of the herd through my lens — gathering horse images to share with the world. Horse behaviors you might not ever see if you can’t get out to see these untamed creatures for yourself. It’s my passion to capture what Deerwood Ranch claims “Wild as Wyoming” for all of you to see.
But here’s the kicker folks, if your mustang moment is seeing wild horses roam free living out their natural lives, you can!
Deerwood Ranch Wild Horse EcoSanctuary has tours from May 1st through September 30th each year. 10 am to Noon, Tuesday through Saturday. I encourage you to put some spice in your life and be adventurous. But, you must make reservations to see their magnificent herd.
I promise you will have the experience of a lifetime. You will witness the manners and habits of the herd causing you to fall deeper in love with horses.
