I love the idea of the roaming ranch hand. Moving from place to place over the years, seeing new places, working at amazing ranches, learning new horse training skills, riding different horses. The ebb and flow of ranching as the season's change. Calving and branding in the spring and fall. Daily roundup, and the summer haying season. Swapping stories and absorbing tips from the well seasoned wranglers around the nightly campfire.
Knowing your cattle ranching job, and knowing it well. Because there is a huge difference between someone who rides a horse and a badass cowgirl who commands her steed and her ranching skills. Stong. Confident. Hardworking. Humble.
Every year, I have the pleasure of attending a women's equestrian photography retreat with Equine Photographers Network. During my last stay at the amazing Powder Horn Ranch in Wyoming, I ventured out to capture equine images of this cowgirl and her sweet little Rocky Mountain Horse Smurf. Roaming the vast ranch lands. A magnificent storm was brewing at sunset. We chased the very last light of day, as I pushed the limits of my camera to capture that sky and the beautiful team. I’m pretty sure after we left this place it was raining before we made it down the mountain.
